Yes, we move in winter

Leases still turn over in January, and life doesn't wait for spring. Checkmate Moving is owner-operated and local, and we move in Winnipeg and surrounding area through the winter. On snowy days we pad and cover everything going in and out, so your furniture isn't sitting wet in the truck or tracked through slush.

Clear a safe path

The most useful thing you can do is clear and salt your walks, driveway and steps the day before, and again the morning of if it snows overnight. Do it at both ends if you can, or ask the new landlord or seller to. Lay down some old mats or cardboard inside the door to catch the snow and keep the floors dry.

Parking, snow routes and bans

Winter parking is the part people forget. Check the City of Winnipeg's snow clearing schedule and any residential parking bans for your streets before you lock in a date, and watch for snow route signs. Make sure there's a cleared spot near the door for the truck at both ends.

Keep the heat and power on

Book hydro, gas, water and internet at the new place so they're on before move day. A warm, lit house is a lot easier to move into in January. With the door opening and closing, the place will cool off. Turning the thermostat down a little while we work, and back up once we're done, is normal.

Things that don't like the cold

Electronics: let TVs and computers warm up to room temperature before you turn them on.
Plants: wrap them well and move them in your own warm car if you can.
Anything that can freeze, like paint, cleaners or some liquids, should travel with you.
Pianos and instruments: mention them when you book so we can talk about them.

Plan for short days

It gets dark early in a Winnipeg winter. Have lights on at both places, and keep your essentials bag, keys and phone charger handy. Dress in layers. You'll be in and out of the door all day.
