Book the elevator early
Condos and apartments often need the service elevator booked. Do it at both ends as soon as you have a date. Ask about move-in hours and padding rules.
Measure doorways
Measure doors, halls, and stairwells at the new place. Then measure your biggest pieces. It saves a lot of guesswork on the day.
Label every box
Write the room and what's inside on the side, not just the top. Mark fragile boxes clearly. Keep one "open first" box per room.
Sort out truck parking
Save a spot close to the door at both ends. Check for street parking bans, snow routes, and any building rules on loading zones.
Watch month-end
Lots of leases turn over at the end of the month. If you can be flexible on dates, ask about a mid-month move.
Transfer your utilities
Set up hydro, gas, internet, and water at the new place before move day. A warm, lit house is a lot easier to move into in January.
Pack an essentials bag
Meds, chargers, documents, keys, a change of clothes, toilet paper, and snacks. Keep it with you, not on the truck.
