Apartment & condo moves in Winnipeg
Elevators, stairwells, loading doors and building rules. A little planning makes an apartment or condo move go a lot smoother.
What makes apartment and condo moves different
Moving out of a house is mostly about the stuff. Moving out of an apartment or condo is also about the building. There's usually a service elevator to book, a set window for moves, a loading door or back entrance to use, and somewhere the truck has to park. If those pieces are sorted ahead of time, the move itself goes faster and with less stress for you and your neighbours.
Checkmate Moving is an owner-operated local mover serving Winnipeg and surrounding area. We do apartment and condo moves of all sizes, from a studio to a full suite, and we're happy to talk through your building's setup when you call or text for a quote.
Book the elevator at both ends
Most condo and apartment buildings want the service elevator booked for moves. Call your property manager or condo office as soon as you have a date, and do it for both the building you're leaving and the one you're moving into. Ask:
- What hours are moves allowed? Some buildings don't allow moves on weekends or evenings.
- Does the elevator need pads hung, and who puts them up?
- Is there a damage deposit or move-in fee?
- Which door should the truck use, and is there a loading zone?
Once you know the window, tell us. We'll plan the day around it.
Stairs and walk-ups
Plenty of Winnipeg apartments are older walk-ups with no elevator. That's fine. Let us know how many flights there are at each end, and whether there are tight turns. Measure your biggest pieces, like a sectional, a box spring or a dresser, and the narrowest spot on the way out. That helps us give you an honest quote and plan how things come out.
Parking and the truck
Save a spot as close to the entrance as you can. Check for street parking bans, snow routes in winter, and any building rules about the loading area. If your building has a parkade with a low ceiling, mention it.
Protecting the building and your things
Furniture gets wrapped and padded for the trip. On rainy or snowy days we pad and cover everything going in and out, which matters a lot when you're carrying through a lobby and down a hallway.
Tips before move day
- Confirm the elevator booking a few days before.
- Tell the front desk or caretaker the move is happening.
- Pack and label boxes with the room name on the side.
- Keep keys, fobs and parking passes together in your essentials bag.
- Check our 8-week moving checklist for the rest.
