If you're packing yourself
Plenty of people pack their own boxes and leave the heavy lifting to the movers. A few habits make a big difference on move day:
- Start early with rooms you don't use much, like storage rooms, spare bedrooms and closets.
- Heavy things go in small boxes, light things in big boxes. A big box full of books is hard on everyone.
- Fill gaps with towels, linens or paper so things don't shift.
- Tape the bottom and the top. A box with folded flaps can give way.
- Label the side with the room and what's inside, not just the top. Stacked boxes hide their lids.
- Mark fragile boxes clearly, and keep them light.
Kitchens and fragile items
The kitchen takes longer than people expect. Wrap plates individually and stand them on edge. Wrap glasses and stuff them with paper. Pack spices and open containers in sealed bags. Leave out a few dishes and a pot for the last days.
What to keep with you
Pack an essentials bag that stays with you, not on the truck: meds, chargers, documents, keys, a change of clothes, toilet paper and snacks. Keep valuables and important papers with you too.
Getting ready for us
Have boxes taped and stacked out of the walkway, ideally near the door. Leave furniture empty if you can, and take apart beds and tables you're comfortable taking apart. Our 8-week moving checklist lays out the timing week by week.
